My Eternal Daydream
2. Figure Unmasked
The next day at school I couldn’t get my mind off them. Them, this person, my mysterious midnight kisser. My head was on another planet as I sat, sunken into the shadows of my Geography glass drawing wispy love hearts into the back of my book. My every thought was consumed around my mystery kiss. Who were they and would I ever see them again?
I tried ever so hard to look for them, eventually I came to my senses and after I could still taste them on my lips I had no choice but to hunt them down. Yet no one compared to the bright intensity of those artic blue eyes that lulled me to sleep that night. They melted me, and even through the darkness I could see them, shining in the black void.
They had stolen my rose, I noticed when the lights came back on, and I remembered they were twirling it through their fingers as we kissed. I day dreamed, it all seemed like a dream, us kissing and of our newly discovered passion for each other. I had to find them, I concluded in my mind as I traced the end to another love heart: I must find them.
“Class, quite down,” preceded the monotonous voice of our teacher at the front of the class, “We have new student who joins us today.”
Curious eyes widened and lips chattered with excitement as I groaned. Praying to escape into another world I put my head down on my desk. The door opened as I floated off.
“Take a seat next to Xavier at the back,” said my teacher to the new student, “And maybe you could tell him to make haste and wake up before he will be sent out of my class.”
I lifted my head as the figure sat next to me, and I caught just a sample of their smell. Fruity, like the forest and rain… and then I looked at them, their eyes which were…
But then something exploded inside my chest as I paid detail to the other parts of their body. Correction. His body. The figure was unmasked; and it was a boy. I had kissed another boy. My mysterious midnight kisses had long silken hair that covered his eyes and smooth pale ivory skin that almost seemed white and ghostlike. Red, almost poisonous-like lips and soft delicate fingers.
“Please to meet you Xavier, my name is Axel,” his voice was musical and almost majestic. But I stopped. My whole world just crumbled, broke down and ended.
“We’ve met before haven’t we?” Was all I managed to asked.
“I believe we might’ve” Axel said conversationally, a curious and mischievous smile then begun dancing under his lips, “My cousin, Alista Allequet had her masquerade ball last night, and I have to say I had the most incredible, fervent kiss with someone last night. How about yourself? You attended the event did you not?”
I nodded, I was stunned like my blood had frozen over. Nervousness splintered through me and pushed to the tips of my fingers which caused them to shake uncontrollably.
“And did you kiss someone?” he asked, biting down a beautiful smile.
I nodded once more.
“And how were they?”
“I don’t know exactly,” I said and then I noticed, (and my heat skipped many more beats), a white rose in his front pocket, “It all seems like a dream, like a vague, inexplicable delusion.”
“Well you must remember if the were of some satisfaction,” he asked, now obvious that he was toying with my emotions and flirting with my false ignorance.
“Yes,” I said empty. “They were to my satisfaction.”
Axel then laughed, he turned to face the front of the class a we sat for the rest of the class in silence.
I noticed his long white, ghostly hand inches from mine, but never touching. His pale face that had the complexion of a dove and blazing frosty eyes speculated me from the corner of his stare, but never intruded me or my space. My mind was working at a thousand miles per hour. This was not happening. Why?
I don’t even know how to feel, to comprehend, to justify or to explain any of this. Then, before the end of class, so elegantly he slipped me a note and walked out without making eye contact, I unfolded the carefully folded piece of paper and read the writing:
Meet me at Whiteman Palace tonight and you’ll discover if your daydream was a reality.
I tried to breathe but suddenly I had no lungs. I folded the note and put it into my pocket.
Well, there we go! This section of the story reveals that this love story is centred around two young men. I wrote this chapter with the intention to explore all the many things that could happen or go through someone’s mind when they do something that isn’t considered ‘right’ by everybody.
Also at the time, I had just ended a ‘somewhat’ painful relationship with someone who was forbidden to be in a relationship with someone like me. I wanted to portray and set up a circumstance where two people kissed, not knowing their consequences, and by the time they experienced their kissed; they were already compelled to be with one another.
Considering the context and time, this kiss between Xavier and Axel is definitely not one that would be approved, and at the time of writing this story I wanted to recreate a love story that was also forbidden. Not because of grudges between two houses or through deceit, revenge or unfaithfulness, but through same sex. I was also inspired to create one character who seemed assure of this exchange, [as Axel clearly does], however I wanted the protagonist to doubt this exchange and therefore explore and discover this new venture with the reader.
I hope you enjoyed this reveal and stay tuned for the next chapter!
